Washington, DC - In a ruling proposed by FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel earlier today, E-Rate funding can be used to provide Wi-Fi on school buses. This ruling will have an everlasting and substantial impact, especially on rural and socioeconomically disadvantaged youth across the country. In making this decision, the FCC recognizes the importance of connecting students to the internet, where they can investigate their interests from outside of the classroom. This ruling is also a stance in favor of digital equity and access for so many school-aged students who lack high-speed internet at home. By providing Wi-Fi on school buses, students’ learning time will be extended to include their commutes to and from school as well as sports and other extracurricular activities. Students can use their time on the bus to complete homework, do research, and study for exams.
